Unless you’re a Mac user, I say an emphatic yes. I have destroyed 2 “business class” machines with poor displays (ouch, my eyes!) and just picked up a cheaper Acer gaming laptop to serve as my daily machine. Things have come a long way in this class of machines.
Storage: 1 sata SSD drive and 2 NVME slots. With prices on 1TB m.2 storage sticks coming down in price, this is a big boost.
Dual-boot: being able to boot into Windows 10 and use Photoshop and run a couple games at reasonable performance is great for when you need a break. You did max out the storage, right? Right.
CPU: for writing code in vim I could use an android tablet’s worth of machine capacity. But that’s never what’s going on, is it. I have anywhere from 3 to 5 docker containers running at any given moment and several different virtual machines configured under VirtualBox that may or not be running. On top of that, I tend to run firefox for communications-web and chrome for development-web … because if you’re writing code, don’t lie: you’ve got eleventy thousand tabs open from github to local API docs to stackoverflow. All of this web + background process running turns into a pretty big demand on the CPU.
RAM: 8GB of RAM just doesn’t cut it. You really need at least 12GB, 16GB or more. Because every Linux desktop application now comes bundled as an Electron app and includes a daemon, you need memory and lots of it. I won’t talk about browser load. If I could have 2 physical CPUs inside a laptop I’d take one. If you’re a mobile developer then you really need the extra capacity for running the device emulator and the IDE to check your work. Apple’s Swift won’t even compile from src with 8GB of RAM on Linux without modifying the build script.
Cooling: yes, cooling. I spend a lot of time compiling projects from src in c/c++, java, go (thankfully it’s fast), and rust (not so fast). If you pass in multi-core support to the build you’ll be generating a lot of heat very quickly. The “turbo” features on Intel chips have variable clockrates now and a gaming laptop’s beefed up cooling system is a really big bonus. I’m pretty sure I basically cooked my last HP and Dell to death.
Keyboard: programmers aren’t what I would call delicate touch typists. Inside of a year there’s usually about 20% of the keys that are missing their letter markings on the top for me. Having a more durable integrated keyboard is nice.
Graphics / Display: your eyes will appreciate an HD display with good resolution. While the extra memory on integrated graphics chip is pretty worthless in Linux, having a bit better screen is nice compared to the el-cheapo LCD displays typically found on most run-of-the-mill laptops. I don’t know that the extra Nvidia beef helps for running 4–6 desktop windows under ubuntu/mint, but it doesn’t seem to hurt, either. You will need to go the extra mile to configure proper drivers for AMD Radeon or Nvidia which is worth it over letting the base installation default to integrated Intel graphics.
Construction: gaming laptops were designed to be thrown around a lot by adolescents and teenagers. This translates well to TSA searches during travelling and frequent cafe trips which include an inevitable drop onto the floor from table height, perhaps bouncing off a chair first.Looks: yeah, it’s loud and doesn’t look very “professional”. Perfect. Another clean point scored for the gaming laptop: it only looks better with each additional sticker applied to the outer shell, eventually morphing into some kind of advanced alien artifact that confuses the biz people when plugging in for a presentation.

I think the gaming systems are better in nearly every way from their similarly or higher priced “business” machines, or high-end models that flip around like a tablet and/or feature a touch display, which *will* get broken in aforementioned travel / regular cafe use, and/or burn themselves to death during constant CPU loads.
